Lieutenant Colonel Jon Duke, USMC

LtCol Duke hails from the State of Arkansas and is a 1991 graduate of
the United States Naval Academy.  Upon graduation, he was commissioned
as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and assigned
to The Basic School for Marine officers (TBS).  Following completion
of TBS, he was assigned to the Third Marine Division where he served
from 1993 to 1996 as the Intelligence Officer (S-2) for 2nd Battalion,
12th Marines, the Assistant Intelligence Officer (S-2A) for 12th
Marines and 4th Marines, Reconnaissance Platoon Commander for 4th
Marines and finally as the Executive Officer and Diving Officer for
the 3rd Reconnaissance Company.
In 1996, LtCol Duke was assigned to the National Ground Intelligence
Center as a liaison officer from the Marine Corps Intelligence
Activity.  He served in the Middle East Division of the Forces
Directorate as an Iranian Ground Combat Analyst.  In 1998, he was
selected for the Marine Corps Foreign Area Officer (FAO) Program and
was subsequently assigned to the Naval Postgraduate School in
Monterey, California for FAO training.  In Monterey, LtCol Duke earned
a master’s degree in national security studies and completed the basic
Arabic and Hebrew linguist courses at the Defense Language Institute.
In December 2000, LtCol Duke was assigned to the U.S. Defense Attache
Office in Tel Aviv, Israel for in-country training phase of the FAO
program.  He resided in Jerusalem and conducted independent travel and
study throughout the Middle East and completed advanced language in
Hebrew and Arabic.  In 2001, he participated in the Anna Sobol Levy
Fellowship at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, conducting research on
the Second Intifadah.
In January 2002, LtCol Duke was assigned to the 4th Marine
Expeditionary Brigade (Anti-Terrorism) where he served as the Deputy
Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence (G-2) from 2002 through July
2005.  During this period, he deployed to Djibouti where he served as
the J-2 Operations Officer for the Combined-Joint Task Force – Horn of
Africa (CJTF-HOA).  During this deployment, he was also seconded to
the US Defense Liaison Office in Khartoum, Sudan as the CJTF-HOA
Country Coordination Element.  From May to December 2004, he deployed
to Iraq with the I Marine Expeditionary Force as the senior
intelligence analysts in the Tactical Fusion Center in Ramadi, Iraq.
From July to December 2005, LtCol Duke reported to the Deputy
Commandant of the Marine Corps for Plans, Policies, and Operations as
the CENTCOM Plans Officer in the International Plans and Policies
Division.
From January 2006 to February 2009, LtCol Duke was assigned to Defense
Intelligence Agency as the Marine Corps Attache to Israel. During this
period, he observed and reported on IDF military operations following
the kidnapping of Sgt Gilad Shalit and the Israeli-Hizbollah war
during the summer of 2006.  From 2007 to 2009, he was assigned to be
serve as the special assistant to the U.S. Road Monitoring Mission
following the Annapolis Peace Talks, monitoring and reporting on
Israeli and Palestinian compliance with the Roadmap To Peace brokered
by the U.S., Russia, the European Union, and the United Nations.
Currently, LtCol Duke is serving as the Operations Officer for the
Marine Special Operations Regiment, Marine Corps Forces, Special
Operations Command.  He is slated to take command of 3rd Marine
Special Operations Battaion in November 2010.
LtCol Duke is married to the former Margaret Owens of McClean,
Virginia. He and Maggie have six children and reside at Camp Lejeune,
North Carolina.
